Day of No Music 2008: Breaking the Silence

Posted on 3 November, 2008

It’s close to that time of year again. November is one of my favorite months. My birthday and Thanksgiving are both in this month. November is also the month where I start preparing for the Day of No Music. I started to observe the Day of No Music last year when I heard about it on NPR. I thought it was a great idea and tried it out. It’s amazing how hard it is to not listen to music and to stop yourself from reaching for that iPod, start up some music on the computer, or even simply humming.

Why do I celebrate the Day of No Music? I do it for many reasons. It helps me realize how precious music is to me. It helps me realize that I take it for granted. It helps me appreciate the importance of music in my life. It helps me to enjoy the little nuances in each song.

22 November is the Feast of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music. Celebrating the Day of No Music the day before – 21 November – makes sense. Essentially a fast from music the day before the feast.

This year, I have a pretty nice list set up to break the silence with. I just noticed that many of the songs were released in 2006. I guess my taste in music really sits in with that year.

1. – Superstition – Stevie Wonder – 1972
2. – Take a Bow – Muse – 2006
3. – California 2005 – Phantom Planet – 2005
4. – A Million Ways – OK Go – 2005
5. – Yeah Yeah Yeah Song – The Flaming Lips – 2006
6. – Reason Is Treason – Kasabian – 2004
7. – Snow (Hey Oh) – Red Hot Chili Peppers – 2006
8. – Clair De Lune – Claude Débussy – 1890
9. – Dimension – Wolfmother – 2006
10. – Steady, As She Goes – The Raconteurs – 2006
11. – Such Great Heights – The Postal Service – 2003
12. – Intervention – Arcade Fire – 2007
13. – A Certain Romance – Arctic Monkeys – 2006
14. – Heart in a Cage – The Strokes – 2006
15. – Oil and Water – Incubus – 2007
16. – That Smell – Lynyrd Skynrd – 1977
17. – Black Hole Sun – Soundgarden – 1993
18. – Enter Sandman – Metallica – 1991
19. – Exactly Where I’m From – Mirah – 2004
20. – One of the Brightest Stars – James Blunt – 2007

I’ll be writing about two of the songs on the list every day, in reverse order, on why I chose it for the list starting 10 November.

Well, students will be granted parking near Allen Hall, but that's first-come-first-served. - 2 days ago

After 1200, students won't be allowed into lots to park - they'll have to go to the reserved spot at the edge of campus. Same for staff. - 2 days ago
